JANCIS ROBINSON, July 2012
Very lively and really sophisticated. More rewarding than many white burgundies. Really charming.
GOURMET TRAVELLER, QANTAS INFLIGHT GUIDE TO WINE, 7th Edition
Toolangi is a new label going places. Sourced from Garry and Julie Hounsell's Dixons Creek vineyard, the 2008 Chardonnay has a dance-on-the-tongue lightness, is both refined and texturally harmonious, and its finish is sustained by citrus-bright acidity.
RICK ALLEN, PARRAMATTA ADVERTISER, February 9 2011
Toolangi in the Yarra Valley make three chardonnays - and this is the cheapest... you're getting a modern, sophisticated wine that will hold its own against very serious company. Stonefruits, some peach and melon and just a tang of grapefruit. It's complex and smooth, ideal for when you want something classy.
NICK STOCK, THE AGE GOOD WINE GUIDE 2011
A neatly phrased Yarra chardonnay realised with Dixon’s Creek and Yarra Glen fruit, this offers plenty of stone fruits, grapefruit and melon, gently complexed with nut and spice barrel-derived flavour and a layered, smooth texture.
PAUL IPPOLITO.COM.AU, 5 MINUTE WINE RUSH
Attention. Attention please. We have a winner here. Smart intelligent thinking man’s Chardonnay. Well this smart intelligent thinking man’s Chardonnay at least. Well who’s a clever boy in picking this off the sample bench this Friday night. Points scored all round. Hand picked low cropped Yarra Valley fruit. Made at Yering Station and Shadowfax, boy, lucky grapes I say, this ticks all the boxes for me – quality, value, balance and drinkability and a divine match with pasticcio with haloumi, spinach and broccoli. Viva Toolangi, Viva Yarra Valley and Viva la Chardonnay I say. Drink Now. About $25. Alc 13%. 94/100 – Excellent.
JAMES HALLIDAY, AUSTRALIAN WINE COMPANION, 2011 Edition
Part estate-grown, part from Yarra Glen contract-grown fruit, part made at Shadowfax, part at Yering Station (where the wine was blended and bottled). Complex, certainly, but more focused than one might expect, with white peach, nectarine and grilled nut flavours through to a long finish. Rating 94. To 2016.
WINSOR DOBBIN, LAUNCESTON SUNDAY EXAMINER, September 5 2010
This Yarra Valley winery produces three different chardonnays, each made by different winemakers and each very different stylistically. This is a fresh, very modern wine with citrus flavours and crisp minerality noticeable on the palate with oak very much in a support role. A fresh and lively wine with plenty of light and shade, hints of nuttiness and sensible alcohol levels (13 %), it's a lovely drink for a warm afternoon or evening.
KERRY SKINNER, ILLAWARRA MERCURY, August 18 2010
It’s little wonder drinkers are flocking back to chardonnay in their droves. Crafted by the winemaking teams at Shadowfax and Yering Station for Toolangi owners Garry and Julie Hounsell, this is a real stunner. Elegant and classy with aromatic, pristine stonefruit flavours, integrated nutty characters, unobtrusive oak and a lingering, clean finish. Drink with lobster.
BEN KNIGHT, THE MELBOURNE WEEKLY, 16-22 June 2010
Recently released from one of Victoria’s top chardonnay producers, the Toolangi is fresh and bright, driven by citrus acidity and peachy notes, with subtle baking spice from the oak. It is still a young wine and will fill out nicely over the next two to three years.
