91 Points - Halliday Wine Companion 2021
Tasting Notes: A bright, layered rendition, unfurling in the glass with dark cherry and raspberry tones, dried sage and orange peel. It’s savoury and elegant at once, driven by crunchy acids and finely structured tannins. One to contemplate.
Winemaking Notes: Hand-picked on the 17th of March
Vinification & Elevage: Wild yeast fermented as 75% whole berries and 25% as whole bunches, on skins for 3 weeks. Pressed to barrel (15% new French oak) for natural malolactic conversion, then sulphured on lees for 9 months.
Viticultural Notes: Established in 1995, Toolangi Vineyard is located in the Yarra Valley adjoining the Toolangi State Forest. This single site vineyard on fine clay loam produces wines with distinctive personalities, each wine showing a strong sense of place. Low cropped and hand harvested fruit from 19-year-old vines of MV6 Pinot Noir clone from a selected section of E Block, rows 19-34.
2020 was a long and cool growing season in the Yarra Valley. Winter rains were substantial and by the end of spring we had full and healthy vine canopies. The conditions around flowering were challenging leading to low fruit yields. The season progressed with very mild conditions extending the ripening period for harvest well into Autumn for some varieties. The 2020 wines reflect our part of the world and our cool climate.
