THE WINE FRONT: 94 POINTS
Tasting Notes: Vivacious and firm, this medium-bodied but lusciously fruited pinot noir unfolds a deep perfume of red rose petals, strawberries, raspberries and cherries backed by notes of citrus, cola and dried herbs. Knit with tight-grained oak, its plush, juicy palate extends with direction and harmony towards a racy acidity that keeps it taut and focused.
Winemaking Notes: Vinification: De-stemmed top open fermenter (50% whole bunch), short cold soak, natural primary and malolactic fermentation, 25 days on skins, pressed to French oak (20% new)
Elevage: 8 months in oak, racked off lees just prior to bottling. Unfined and unfiltered.
Viticultural Notes: Hand-picked on 12th March 2018
First established in 1995, Toolangi Vineyards is located in the Yarra Valley adjoining the Toolangi State Forest. This Pinot Noir is grown on fine clay loam and produces grapes which represent the unique site. Low cropped and hand harvested from 17 year old vines of MV6 clone grapes on E Block, this wine represents the very best Pinot Noir that this vineyard produces. The 2018 harvest will be remembered fondly by winemakers in the Yarra Valley. It was a rare season that gave above average yields and excellent quality fruit. Dry sunny conditions with cool overnight temperatures provided good natural acidity and concentrated wines at lower alcohol levels.
